The reintroduction and strategic deployment of the Rural Flying Squad once again paid when members removed illicit drugs with an estimated street value of R160 000 from the streets which led to the arrest of two suspects who are expected to make a court appearance in the Oudtshoorn Magistrates’ court on Monday, 30 August 2021.

On Friday, 27 August 2021 at about 18:20 while conducting patrols along the N12 the members spotted a Merced’s Benz which was enroute to Oudtshoorn. The occupants acted suspiciously when they threw parcels out of the moving vehicle. The vigilant members pursued the vehicle and stopped it just outside Oudtshoorn. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a consignment of Tik and Mandrax tablets. It was later established that the parcels which were dropped along the road also contained packets of Mandrax tablets. The police seized the vehicle and confiscated 1579 Mandrax Tablets with an estimated street value of R125 000 as well as 92 gram of Tik valued at over R35 000.

Both suspects aged 33 and 35, both from Thembalethu (George), remains in custody. They are facing charges of dealing in drugs.

The strategic deployment of flying squad members on Western Cape roads yielded excellent results with the confiscation of over R5 million of drugs during the past month alone. These drugs were destined for distribution in communities, but concerted efforts of the police dealt the illicit drug trade a heavy blow when these consignments were intercepted. Western Cape police management commended the members for their vigilance in pursuing drug pedlars and their efforts to eradicate drug trafficking on the major roads of this province.
