Efforts to eradicate unlicensed firearms and ammunition from our communities yielded positive results when police members arrested a suspect for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition next to the railway station in 12 Avenue Belmont Park. The members saw a suspicious male crossing the railway line and after requesting permission to search him, they found a 9mm Norinco pistol with ammunition in his possession. The 23-year-old man was arrested and detained on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
In an unrelated matter members of the Western Cape Flying Squad arrested two suspects aged 22 and 29 for the possession of a prohibited firearm and an imitation firearm on a farm in Philippi after they received information about the suspects in the area.
The suspects who ran away from the farm in the direction of the police were stopped and searched and found in possession of a 38 special revolver and ammunition and an imitation firearm (shotgun).
Once charged, the suspects will appear in Blue Downs and Athlone Magistrate’s courts respectively on Monday, 20 September 2021.
