WESTERN CAPE - Rapid response by members of Maitland Flying Squad resulted in the apprehension of a 32-year-old suspect who was involved in a robbery in Elsies River, on Thursday 31 March 2022.
Members of Maitland Flying Squad received a complaint about a robbery of a cigarette delivery vehicle and they responded instantly. The suspects fled the scene, with police members in pursuit. After a high speed chase, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into nearby Ravensmead. A 32-year-old male was arrested and detained when he was found in possession of a 9 mm pistol with no serial number.
The suspect was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition and will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s court on Monday, 4 April 2022.
Furthermore, on Thursday, 31 March 2022, at approximately 23:30, members of the Provincial Extortion Task Team were conducting foot patrols in Covid 19, informal settlement in Mfuleni. An anonymous source reported alleged illegal activities in the area. The members followed up on the information and found a 49-year-old male in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. They also discovered liquor at the back of the premises, which he sells without a license. The suspect was arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and dealing in liquor without a valid liquor license.
Once charged, the suspect will make an appearance in the Blue Down’s Magistrate’s court.
