In the pursuit to eradicate the province of unlicensed firearms” led to the arrest of four suspects.
On Sunday 29 August 2021 at about 17:00, Nyanga police members were busy with routine patrols when they received information about a suspicious vehicle parked in Somtsewu Crescent in Crossroads. Upon entering the crescent, they noticed the vehicle that fitted the description. The members searched the occupants and confiscated a 9mm Norinco pistol with ammunition. Two males and one female were arrested and detained as no one possessed a valid licence to be in possession of the mentioned firearm.
In an unrelated incident, Philippi East police members, were busy conducting a stop and search operation on Monday 30 August 2021 at about 10:00, when they received information about a firearm hidden in a house. The information was operationalized and the address in Marcus Garvey was searched. A 9mm Glock pistol was found hidden under a pillow. A 32-year-old male was arrested and detained.
Once charged the four suspects are expected to make court appearances in the Athlone Magistrate’s court respectively on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
