Suspects arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition and drugs

Our endeavour to root out the illegal possession of firearms and drugs in our communities led to the arrest of a 47-year-male this morning at about 11:15 in Aiden Street Athlone.

Members of Public Order Police were busy patrolling a hotspot area that are being plagued by gang violence, when they received information about firearms and drugs at an address. The members followed up the information and when they came near to the address they noticed a male standing at the gate. When he saw the police approaching he tried to get away but the members were hot on his heels. The suspect and the premises were searched and 1.070kg tik, 238 mandrax tablets and rounds of ammunition and magazines were found on the premises.

The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrates court on Monday on charges of possession of ammunition and drugs.

In an unrelated matter Mitchells Plain police members were busy with patrols early morning on Friday, 18 February 2022, near to Norma Street when the heard the sound of gunshots. The members responded and saw a man running in their direction, upon which they stopped and searched the suspicious man and confiscated a 9mm firearm and ammunition.

The suspect is due to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates court on Monday on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
