Suspect arrested after high speed chase

A 26-year-old male was arrested on charges of attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving and failure to comply with an SAPS instruction after a high speed chase through the suburbs during the early hours of this morning, 9/02.

It is alleged that at approximately 01:30 this morning, Gqeberha K9 members were busy with crime prevention patrols in Summerstrand when they noticed a vehicle driving slowly without any lights at the Kings Beach parking area.  As the members entered the parking area, the vehicle started to speed off.

A chase ensued and backup was requested. Various stations and response vehicles joined in the chase and attempts to stop the double cab Colt LDV bakkie proved difficult as the suspect vehicle sped towards the Algoa Park area disregarding the traffic lights in their escape attempt. As the chase pursued towards Algoa Park, the driver attempted to force the SAPS vehicle off the road. Warning shots were fired and the bakkie halted at the Chatty dip. The driver was arrested on the abovementioned charges.

The LDV bakkie and its trailer was impounded and the suspect is expected to appear in the Gqeberha magistrate’s court soon.
