Recent heavy rain has resulted in flooding along Clarence Drive near Gordon’s Bay, with a road closure in effect. This has necessitated the closure of access to Steenbras Nature Reserve in the interest of public safety.
The closure of access to Steenbras Nature reserve includes the popular hiking route, which will remain closed until such time as nature reserve staff conduct an assessment of the condition of the trail. Hikers who have bookings for the trail will be notified and their bookings will be rescheduled for a later date.
'The Steenbras Nature Reserve is a popular destination for hikers and day visitors, and the closure of the trail comes during peak season. The inconvenience is regretted, but we must put safety first to ensure that visitors are not at risk. The closure will also permit the reserve staff to effect necessary repairs caused by the flooding.
'We look forward to welcoming visitors back to the reserve once the trail and road access routes have been restored,' said Alderman Eddie Andrews, the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment.
