South Africa’s Auditor-General Elected as UNESCO External Auditor

Pretoria – Tsakani Maluleke, the Auditor-General of South Africa, has been acclaimed following her appointment as the External Auditor of UNESCO. Her tenure is set to span from 2024 to 2029.

According to South African Government News Agency, Maluleke’s election to the global position is a testament to her professional capabilities and the robust governance institutions within South Africa. Maluleke, who took office as Auditor-General on 1 December 2020 after being recommended by the National Assembly, had served as Deputy Auditor-General and is the first woman to hold this office. A Chartered Accountant by profession, Maluleke holds academic qualifications from the University of Cape Town and a post-graduate diploma from the University of the Witwatersrand.

On 16 November 2023, Maluleke secured her new role with UNESCO through the election by members of various committees and subsidiary organs of the United Nations agency, which is dedicated to promoting peace and security through international cooperation across multiple sectors. The President extended his best wishes to Maluleke for her forthcoming tenure as she takes on the oversight position.
