Doha, Qatar – President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has announced the country’s intent to file a formal complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Israeli government for alleged war crimes in Gaza, Palestine.
According to South African Government News Agency, South Africa, along with other countries, has referred the actions of the Israeli government to the ICC, believing that war crimes are being committed. He mentioned that while South Africa does not condone the earlier actions taken by Hamas, it condemns the current operations by Israel and supports an investigation by the ICC.
During a media briefing in Doha, Qatar, as part of his state visit, President Ramaphosa reiterated South Africa’s stance on the conflict in the Middle East. He emphasized the country’s opposition to the ongoing military operations in Gaza, particularly those targeting hospitals and resulting in civilian casualties. The President described these actions as ignoring the sanctity of life.
The President and his Qatari counterpart, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, exchanged views on the global geopolitical situation, focusing on the crisis in Gaza. President Ramaphosa praised Qatar’s mediation efforts in the crisis, including efforts to release hostages and advocating for a two-state solution, a position South Africa has long supported.
President Ramaphosa described the current situation in Gaza as a “concentration camp” and likened it to genocide. He expressed South Africa’s alignment with other countries and organizations calling for the ICC to investigate the situation. Highlighting the urgency of a ceasefire, he condemned the loss of innocent lives and the disregard for the rule of law in the region.
The President further stated that the South African government’s support for the Palestinian struggle is irrevocable and will extend beyond political support to practical measures. He announced that South Africa would be sending medical supplies and other assistance to the people of Gaza.
