Cape Town: The South African Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of the Republic of Chile to foster collaboration in fisheries and aquaculture. This agreement aims to unlock new opportunities for development and innovation in these sectors, ensuring that marine resources are managed sustainably for the mutual benefit of both nations, according to Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Narend Singh.
According to South African Government News Agency, this MoU is a pivotal development in strengthening the bilateral relations between South Africa and Chile. It sets a formal framework for cooperation, emphasizing the responsible management of fisheries and aquaculture resources. Both countries acknowledge the crucial role these sectors play in economic growth, employment, and food security.
The agreement builds on discussions that began at the 2016 Joint Trade and Investment Commission and enhances existing bilateral relations. The key areas of
cooperation outlined in the MoU include fisheries and aquaculture research, technology exchange, capacity building, and combatting illegal fishing activities.
Both countries are committed to engaging with international forums and regional fisheries management organizations to ensure adherence to best practices and sustainable management principles. A Joint Technical Committee will be established to monitor the implementation of these initiatives and facilitate regular bilateral meetings to maintain ongoing cooperation.
