KINSHASA— A group of rebels attacked several areas of the city of Bukavu in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), including military positions, early Wednesday, a local official said.

Six attackers and two soldiers were killed after the attack, which began around 1:40 a.m. local time, South Kivu governor Theo Kasi said after a meeting of the provincial security council, adding that the attackers were killed by security and defense forces.

A total of 36 attackers have been captured, according to the governor, who added that investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.

Bob Kilubi, commander of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) in South Kivu, blamed the attack on a rebel group called “CPC 64.” The rebels attempted to rescue their companions detained by the Bukavu police since last week.

The rebels targeted several positions of the FARDC and the Congolese National Police in urban neighborhoods, Kilubi said.
