Six accused added in the murder of a former Hawks detective’s father

WESTERN CAPE- The Hawks’ National Task Team’s continued efforts in ensuring that they do not leave no stone unturned in ensuring all those involved in the brutal murder of a 74-year-old father of a former Hawks investigator has yielded yet another milestone success when six more suspects were added to the charge sheet.

Nafiz Modack, Moegamat Ziyaad Poole, Moegamat Toufiek Brown, Mario Petersen, Riaad Gasant and Fagmeed Kelly briefly made their first appearance today at the Atlantis Magistrate Court on charges ranging from conspiracy to commit murder, pre- meditated murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as Prevention of Organised Crime Act 121 of 1998 linked to gang-related offences.

Nicholaas Heerschap, a pensioner and father of former Warrant Officer Nico Heerschap was shot at close range outside their home in Melkbosstrand, Cape Town, in 2019.

His son at the time, was a seasoned detective attached to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in Cape Town. It is understood that the murder was actually aimed at the detective Warrant Officer Heerschap and not his father. Detective Heerschap was allegedly targeted by a criminal syndicate for his investigative work at the time of his father’s murder, he later exited the service shortly after the incident.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation in the Western Cape, Maj Gen Mathipa Makgato applauded the team for their efforts in ensuring that those who contravene the law are expeditiously brought to book.

This marks the additional six suspects charged for their participation in the murder of Nicholaas Heerschap following the successful conviction and sentence of Abongile Nqodi (35) after he entered into a plea agreement with the State consequently serving an effective 20 years direct imprisonment.

More arrests are imminent.
