SAPS Women’s Network and Men for Change Create Awareness on Gender Based Violence

Gqeberha: On Tuesday 14 June 2022 the NMB District Women’s Network Committee organised an internal Gender Based Violence awareness walk which took place in Summerstrand.

Police and civilian personnel from all stations within the district participated in this venture. The purpose of day was highlighted by Sgt Sibaca who voiced her concern of men and women within the SAPS environment who are also victims of this scourge however they choose to suffer in silence. The Station Commander of SAPS Humewood, Brig Leonie Bentley urged everyone present to stand up against GBV and to support and encourage fellow colleagues who may be abused at the hands of their partners.

During the walk, members also interacted with the motorists and pedestrians on the issues of GBV as well as crimes such as robberies and theft out of motor vehicle that is prevalent in the area. Common modus operandi of criminals were brought to their attention so that they, the community/motorists may be vigilant and take the necessary precautions in safeguarding their vehicles and property.

Over 100 men and women participated in the walk. The community welcomed the initiative and commended police for reaching out to the communities in a proactive and positive manner.
