The South African Police Service (SAPS) will host its annual Commemoration Day to honour and pay tribute to women and men in blue who died in the line of duty between April 2023 and March 2024.
As a build up to the National Commemoration Day that will be held at the Union Buildings on 01 September 2024, the SAPS will honour 39 members who died during this period.
Today, we pay tribute and honour to our fallen hero, the late Sergeant Lincorn Shikwambana who died on 10 May 2023.
The 42-year-old member was attached to Honeydew police station in Gauteng as a detective and had 14 years’ of service in the organisation at the time of his passing.
On 10 May 2023, the member and his colleague, Constable Senzo Sibusiso Ncala were following up on information they obtained on a suspect alleged to be in possession of and dealing in explosives intended for illicit mining activities in the area of Roodepoort. The members were ambushed by unknown suspects who fired multiple gun shots at them.
Sergeant Shikwambana and his colleague were fatally wounded where after the suspects fled the scene with the members’ belongings, including their state firearms.
No stone will be left unturned to trace and arrest the perpetrators; investigation still continue.
He leaves behind five children, the youngest being three year old at the time of his father’s passing.
To Sergeant Shikwambana, the SAPS flag does not fly because the wind blows it, it is flying with the last breath of every police officer who died defending it.
