The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has commended the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) for taking decisive action to initiate a criminal case against a senior Gauteng traffic police officer, who unlawfully interfered with a traffic officer while doing her work.
This follows the emergence of cell phone footage showing the Gauteng traffic officer in full uniform swearing and making offensive gestures towards a female EMPD officer.
The video captures the officer using derogatory language and making insults and threats.
‘The RTMC unequivocally condemns the rogue behaviour by the Gauteng traffic officer, especially during Women’s Month when the country is celebrating the contributions and achievements of women.
‘Such unprofessional conduct by a law enforcement officer is both unlawful and unacceptable, and has the potential to undermine the integrity of law enforcement agencies,’ RTMC spokesperson, Simon Zwane, said.
Zwane said the RTMC supports the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) f
or Community Safety, Sizakele Masuku, for laying the charges against the officer, which include crimean injuria, hindering and obstruction of an officer, defeating the ends of justice, and the abuse of authority for personal gain in uniform and official vehicle.
Zwane said the senior traffic officer’s employer, the Gauteng Department of Community, must also take corrective measures to ensure that the officer is held accountable through internal consequence management processes.
‘This occurrence underscores the urgent need for stringent measures against officers who misuse their authority to intimidate and demean others. The RTMC advocates for severe penalties for those who abuse their power, emphasising the importance of upholding the law impartially and with respect,’ Zwane said.
During this significant month, which is dedicated to honouring the strength, resilience, and contributions of women, Zwane underscored the importance of ensuring that all members of law enforcement conduct themselves with the hig
hest levels of professionalism and respect.
He said the RTMC remains committed to fostering a culture of integrity and accountability within all law enforcement agencies.
