Robbery suspects to appear in George court

The vigilance of members deployed during Safer Festive Season operations led to the arrest of four suspects, two charged for robberies, in connection with incidents perpetrated over the past weekend. They are expected to appear in the George Magistrates’ court on Monday, 03 January 2021 on various charges.

 

On Friday, 31 December 2021 at about 04:00 members attached to the George police responded to a house robbery scene at Bokmakierie Street, George. Upon arrival they found an 88-year-old man who sustained multiple injuries during the robbery. The victim was taken to hospital for further medical care.

 

This response led police to Pikkewyn Street, in the same vicinity, where a man armed with a firearm was cornered by security officials. It is alleged that an altercation ensued with the security officials when the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the hand. He was taken to hospital, but was later discharged and remains in police custody. The 25-year-old suspect is expected to appear in court tomorrow on a charge of house robbery.

 

The handgun, a revolver stolen during the robbery, was also recovered.

 

Later the same day, Friday 31 December 2021, police arrested a suspect after he was apprehended on a business premises at Nywerheid Street in the industrial area of George. A laptop and three cell phones were recovered. The 27-year-old suspect is facing a charge of business robbery. He will appear in court once charged.

 

Furthermore, on Saturday, 01 January 2022 vigilant members attached to the George Crime Prevention unit arrested two suspects when they followed-up information about a burglary which was perpetrated at a business situated at Wilderness Heights, outside George, earlier. This arrest also led to the recovery of stolen items which were concealed in the bush adjacent to the burglary scene. The police confiscated a safe, power tools and liquor.

 

Both suspects aged 19 and 21 are expected to make their first court appearance tomorrow, Monday, 3 January 2022 on charges of housebreaking and theft.

 

All arrested remains in police custody.
