GQEBERHA - Two robbery accused were sentenced in the Gqeberha Regional court on Thursday, 31 March 2022 for a case of robbery aggravated which took place on 25 September 2021 in Bethelsdorp.
On the mentioned date, at approximately 15:00 the complainant and a witness were walking when two suspects threatened them with a firearm and took their belongings. Shortly after the robbery was reported at SAPS Bethelsdorp, Allister Gerwell (24) and James Macquena (24) were arrested by police. The stolen property and a toy firearm were recovered. Both suspects remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.
Allister Gerwell was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment while James Macquena was sentenced to 9 years imprisonment. Both accused were declared unfit to possess firearms.
The Station Commander Brig Zolani Xawuka commended D/Sgt Attie Knoetze for his investigation and successful prosecution. ‘We believe that this sentence will send a strong message to criminals who prey on innocent law abiding citizens,’ added Brig Xawuka.
