Robbers convicted for cash-in-transit heist

WESTERN CAPE – Three men have been convicted for armed robbery with aggravating circumstances by the Khayelitsha Regional Court on Tuesday, 03 May 2022.

The incident took place at an elderly pay point in Nyanga, Cape Town in July 2013 where deserving persons expected to receive their government grants from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

A Fidelity armoured vehicle was confronted by armed suspects who robbed the guards of their firearms and an undisclosed cash amount at the local community hall before they fled the scene with a stolen getaway vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf reportedly stolen in Table View. Police trailed them and a shootout ensued. They abandoned their getaway vehicle and managed to hijack a Toyota Quantum.

They were eventually cornered in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, and five suspects were arrested and charged. One stolen Rifle and two other firearms, a Revolver and a 9mm rifle were recovered whilst the undisclosed cash amount was never recovered.

One Suspect, Siyanda Xawuka was injured on his back during the shootout with the police.

The court has found Siyanda Xawuka (34), Dumisani Ngudle (28) and Yongama Ndolombo (34) guilty on two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of possession of prohibited firearm and ammunition respectively. The trio is awaiting their sentencing on 04 June 2022.

They remains in custody as their bail bid was unsuccessful and had been in custody since their arrest in July 2013.
