Return of N2 express brings much relief to commuters

A few thousand residents from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha commuted on the N2 Express service within the first nine days of the service’s return to the Metro-south east. A total of 11 502 passengers from both Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha commuted on the N2 Express buses from 19 February to 28 February 2022.

‘I could not be happier to see the positive uptake of the N2 Express since we have reinstated the service on 19 February 2022. The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate worked really hard to get the buses back on the road and now finally the residents of Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha have an additional choice for a safe and reliable form of public transport. I am looking forward to seeing more commuters return to the service over time and it being as popular as before,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

Since the relaunch of the service on 19 February 2022 up until 28 February 2022, up to 7 028 passengers from Khayelitsha and 4 474 from Mitchells Plain have made use of the N2 Express bus service.

‘These statistics are very encouraging and I believe that the demand is an indication of the quality of service MyCiTi provides. I want to remind all that the City is reintroducing the N2 Express service in three phases with more buses joining the fleet with each phase. If this past week’s demand is anything to go by, we believe that the buses we plan to add to the route over the next four weeks will be greatly welcomed by the residents. We will strive to meet the demand for this service in these regions,’ said Councillor  Quintas.

We aim to have the whole fleet of 34 buses operational by 19 March 2022. The buses will travel to the Civic Centre station in the Cape Town CBD via the N2 freeway.

The phasing of the routes will take place as follows:

  • Phase 1: 19 February to 4 March 2022 (D01, D02, D04)
  • Phase 2: 5 March to 18 March 2022 (D01, D02, D04)
  • Phase 3: 19 March onwards (D01, D02, D03, D04)

Up until this past Sunday, 27 February 2022, the City has distributed the following amount of myconnect cards to commuters:

  • 2 208 commuters from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha received their free cards with 50 mover points at a reduced cost of R20
  • 497 commuters were able to replace their expired/expiring cards  for new cards loaded with 50 mover points. Transfers of values from their old cards were also made possible.

Residents can still benefit from this promotion until tomorrow evening, 5 March 2022. Staff will be available to assist commuters from 05:15 to 18:00 at the Mitchells Plain MyCiTi station and the new Kuyasa MyCiTi kiosk at the public transport interchange outside the Khayelitsha Library.

Commuters can find the time schedules and latest information about the routes on our website at www.myciti.org.za, or phone the Transport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63. The TIC is available 24/7.

A combination of 12-metre low-floor buses and 18-metre low-floor buses – have been serviced and prepared for operations, and bus drivers recruited and trained.
