The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate will be rehabilitating and resurfacing various roads in Asanda and Nomzamo in the Somerset West area. Although the planning and setup of the work site commenced today, the physical work will be visible only within a few weeks. Work is set to continue up until the end of March 2023. Read more below:

Road users are advised to plan accordingly, and avoid the relevant roads as far as possible as traffic flow will be impacted once the work starts.

The work is planned to take place on weekdays, from 07:00 to 17:00. Work may however also take place on weekends and public holidays if required.

The City will ensure that flag personnel direct traffic through temporary detours around the work area.

Segments of the following roads will be included in the upgrade:

• Juqu Street

• Xakia Street

• Thunzi Street

• Phaliso Street

• Shumani Street

• Mkhungelwa Street

• Jaxa Street

• Magatya Street

• Fikile Street

• Phikela Street

• Howard Street

• Sithunzi Street

Residents are advised that vehicles parked on the road and obstructing the maintenance work, will be moved or towed.

‘We ask that the community please cooperate with our team on the ground and that the communities protect the workman from those wanting to intimidate, harass and extort their way into projects. This will only cause disruption and delays, and potentially raise the cost of projects due to contractors being forced to hire additional security. We would like to rehabilitate and resurface portions of these roads to provide residents in the area with safe and smooth road surfaces. Thus, it is in the interest of all of us that the work continues as planned,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The City’s Road Infrastructure Management Department will be milling out the existing road surfacing and replacing it with a new asphalt road surface. The existing concrete roads will undergo cracking and sealing, and upgraded to asphalt. Road markings will be repainted once the road surface has been installed. This work forms part of regular maintenance to prolong the longevity of the city’s road network.

In addition, several new curbs and sidewalks will be constructed in the area. Traffic calming measures including speed humps and raised intersections will also form part of the road upgrades.
