A 46-year-old man accused of raping a 68-year-old woman, has been remanded in police custody, subsequent to appearing briefly on Thursday, 29 September 2022 in the Pampierstad Magistrate’s Court on a count of rape.
The case has been postponed to Wednesday, 05 October 2022 for a formal bail application.
The accused was arrested at his residence in Sakhile village near Pampierstad on Tuesday, 28 September 2022 by the Northern Cape Provincial Tracking Team and Hartswater FCS unit.
It is alleged that in February 2021 the accused forced entry into the victim’s house in Sakhile village and raped her repeatedly and fled the scene.
The investigating officer collected evidence on the crime scene including the DNA samples which were sent for forensic analysis. The accused was unknown to the victim and an investigation was launched.
The accused was later linked positively to the crime scene through the DNA results analysed by the forensic science laboratory and a warrant of arrest was obtained to bring the accused to book.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola praised the team for arresting the accused and ensuring that he will be punished for this heinous crime.
