The City of Cape Town’s Health Department was alerted to a sewage spill in Simon’s Town this morning, in the vicinity of Seaforth and Waters Edge Beaches.

The City of Cape Town’s Health Department was alerted to a sewage spill in Simon’s Town this morning, in the vicinity of Seaforth and Waters Edge Beaches.

The overflow from the rising main from pump station 4, Simon’s Town, has run down through the parking area and walkways down to Seaforth Beach.

Initial assessments indicated that it could be a collapsed sewer linked to the rising sewer main and further assessments are under way to determine the shortest possible route to remediate the situation.

As a result, City Health advises the public that both Seaforth and Waters Edge Beaches are closed for recreation until such time that the spill has been contained, remediated and bacterial counts of the sea water return to normal levels.

The public must avoid contact with the water until further notice, as a precaution.

Signage is in the process of being erected in the area at both beaches, advising the public of the situation.

Any person who enters the water does so at their own risk.

City Health is working closely with its Coastal Management and Water and Sanitation counterparts to determine the impact of the spill on the sea water.

Residents and motorists in the vicinity of Gay Road are cautioned that the spill is affecting the stability of the ground.

City line departments are working together and once the pipe has been repaired, the affected areas (parking lot, walkways etc.) will be sanitised and cleaned.

Water samples at Seaforth and Waters Edge will be taken regularly to monitor bacterial numbers.

We will advise the public as soon as the situation is resolved.
