WESTERN CAPE – The Western Cape Provincial Extortion Task Team conducted targeted operations in the Nyanga precinct on Monday, 07 November 2022, following a series of tip-offs.
The team acted on information received about an extortionist in Zwelitsha and conducted a search at the address of the alleged extortionist. They found two firearms, two magazines and eighty rounds of ammunition. A 34-year-old male suspect was arrested for possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.
The members moved swiftly to another address in the same area where drug dealings were reported. They arrested a 44-year-old male suspect and seized mandrax tablets, 25 packets of tik and 23 stops of dagga. Further information led the team to an address in Ndibela Street, Brown’s Farm, Philippi where a 36-year-old male suspect was found in possession of mandrax tablets. He was arrested for dealing in drugs.
Once charged, all three suspects will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.
In an unrelated incident, Grassy Park SAPS members were patrolling in Parkwood at around 22:25 yesterday. They searched a 23-year-old male suspect and seized a black Girsan pistol with magazine and 16 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested on the spot for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The suspect will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s court, once he has been charged.
On Saturday, 05 November 2022 at about 20:25, Anti-Gang Unit members were busy with crime prevention duties in Hengelaar Street, Beacon Valley when they spotted a suspicious male walking on the side walk. When the police vehicle pulled up next to the suspect, they saw him disposing of an object resembling a firearm onto the church premises. When the members inspected the object they saw that it was a firearm with serial number removed, and 15 rounds of ammunition.
An 18-year-old suspect was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He is due to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court today, 08 November 2022.
