Today, 18 January 2023, City of Cape Town officials checked on the progress at its new R500 million mega housing project in Symphony Way. The project is expected to deliver more than 3 300 State-subsidised housing opportunities to qualifying beneficiaries and their families.
The City's Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, and other dignitaries visited the new ACSA Symphony Way housing project site earlier today to check on its progress. The project will see the development of 3 300 State-subsidised Breaking New Ground (BNG) units. As per the signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA, 2015) between ACSA and the City, the target area for this housing project will be Blikkiesdorp, Malawi Camp and Freedom Farm.
The City identified two sites along Symphony Way which are to be developed for BNG housing. Given the scale of the development, this process will take a number of years to be fully completed. Construction of internal civil services commenced in April 2022 and estimated construction commencement of the top structures will be July 2024 for Site A and November 2024 for Site B, subject to development approvals. Construction of the project is expected to be completed toward the end of 2026, if all goes according to plan.
'Much work has already been completed since we visited the site in August last year. Thank you to the project teams for their continued hard work at this site and at all housing projects across the metro.
'This project is yet another example of the City's delivery of housing opportunities on well-located land. The City remains absolutely committed to building an inclusive city, unlocking opportunities and enabling redress.
'We encourage the community, including neighbours and beneficiaries, to continue to support and work together with the City over the coming years to ensure that this project stays on track. It is exciting to see progress being made at this mega project as it means so many more people will have access to a State-subsidised housing opportunity,' said Councillor Booi.
