Renowned historian and educationist professor joe a. d. alie has been installed chancellor of eastern technical university:amara, representing Minister Dr Haja Ramatulai Wurie, described the installation as an important milestone for the university. He said strong leadership remains vital for building institutions that promote research, innovation and national development. According to Sierra Leone News Agency, the Deputy Minister praised Eastern Technical University for progress made since attaining university status in 2021, while urging the institution to stay focused on producing skilled professionals needed for Sierra Leone's industrialisation, agriculture, technology, manufacturing and infrastructure growth. The Deputy Minister said the Ministry continues to advance reforms aimed at strengthening quality assurance, governance, research, innovation, and technical and vocational education, ensuring graduates gain practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship. He also congratulated Professor Alie and expressed confidence in his ability to deepen the university's growth and strengthen its reputation. In his acceptance address, Professor Alie thanked President Julius Maada Bio and the Government for the confidence placed in him, describing the appointment as both an honour and a serious responsibility. He also acknowledged the contributions of his predecessors and Deputy Chancellor Brima Munda Koroma for sustaining the university's leadership. Professor Alie pledged effective leadership through close collaboration with the University Court, management, Government and development partners in advancing ETU's mission. He stressed that the institution's future must be shaped by quality, relevance and sound governance, not expansion alone. He outlined a vision of transforming Eastern Technical University into a centre of excellence with stronger emphasis on practical skills, entrepreneurship, research and innovation aligned with national development priorities. Calling for deeper collaboration among the un iversity, Government, industry and development partners, he said sustainable institutional growth depends on partnership and accountability. He also urged students to remain disciplined, reject illicit drugs, use social media responsibly and embrace hard work, reminding them that true knowledge grows through continuous learning and critical thinking. Professor Alie concluded by describing Eastern Technical University as a symbol of hope for Sierra Leone and called on all stakeholders to work together to build an institution defined by excellence, innovation and service.
