Prime Minister Advocates for Strong Local Governance in Ongwediva Training Event

ONGWEDIVA: During an event focusing on good governance and project management, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila emphasized the crucial role of local authorities in driving socio-economic development. The Prime Minister’s remarks were delivered at the opening of a training program for the Association of Local Authorities Namibia (ALAN) held in Ongwediva, in collaboration with the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST).

According to Namibia Press Agency (NAMPA), the effectiveness of local governance systems is vital in handling complex challenges, adapting to changes, and ensuring that the human resources of local authorities are skilled and competent. This, she noted, is essential for optimal performance and effective public service delivery. She pointed out that local authorities serve as the primary point of contact with the government for residents and businesses, especially in increasingly urbanized societies.

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila stressed that government policies are focused on achieving human-centered development. This approach aims to ensure that economic growth directly improves the welfare conditions of communities.

At the same event, Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, raised concerns about some councils’ mismanagement of public resources. He cited issues such as wrong priorities, abuse of public funds, power misuse, tribalism, victimization, and intimidation. Uutoni highlighted that some councillors overstep their roles by involving themselves in administrative tasks instead of focusing on decision-making for good governance.

Uutoni emphasized the importance of the training in reminding council members of their responsibilities. He underscored the need for appropriate governance structures that facilitate citizen participation in development planning, as well as the provision of basic infrastructure and services to ensure a decent and dignified life for all.

The training aims to enhance the governance, leadership, and project management skills of local authorities, aligning with the broader objective of improving public service delivery and fostering socio-economic development at the local level.
