Johannesburg: President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for unity, dialogue, and regional cooperation as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) concluded its virtual Extraordinary Summit on the political and security situation in Madagascar. Delivering the closing remarks at the summit, President Ramaphosa highlighted the shared commitment of Heads of State and Government to achieving peace and stability in the region.
According to South African Government News Agency, President Ramaphosa commended the unity of purpose demonstrated during the engagements, urging continued collaboration for addressing critical regional matters. He emphasized the importance of the substantive, detailed, and outcome-based deliberations on Madagascar, affirming SADC’s dedication to supporting a peaceful resolution to the country’s political issues.
President Ramaphosa appealed to the people of Madagascar to embrace national reconciliation. He encouraged them to reflect on their challenges and choose paths of peace, unity, reconciliation, and development. The SADC Chairperson noted the restoration of calm in Madagascar and acknowledged the Transitional Government’s recent efforts to initiate national consultations, which offer a platform for dialogue.
Reaffirming SADC’s commitment, President Ramaphosa assured that the regional body would remain actively engaged in Madagascar’s transition process, emphasizing the need for peace, constitutional order, and democratic governance. He also stressed the significance of cooperation among SADC Member States, highlighting how regional instability affects all members.
President Ramaphosa congratulated Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on his election as incoming Chair of SADC, expressing confidence in ongoing cooperation to advance the organization’s goals. He looked forward to working closely with President Hichilema to promote peace, security, and shared prosperity in the region.
