Send money home through the Post Office
Many families in neighbouring countries are supported by breadwinners who work in South Africa, and who send money home to support them.
The huge increase in transport cost means that many breadwinners will not be able to return home to their families this Christmas. The Post Office offers a solution for them to at least send some extra funds home at a particularly cost-effective rate. The service is available to and from Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Nigeria, Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique and eSwatini.
All Post Offices in South Africa offer the service, and the money can be collected at any post office in the destination country. The transferred funds become available on the same day.
The service is offered through the Universal Post Union and managed by the International Financial System, a system that automates the processing and management of international money orders. The system complies with exchange regulations.
Commission on money sent to Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Nigeria, Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique and eSwatini is as follows:
• Up to R500.00: R50.00
• R500.01 - R999.99: R75.00
• R1000.00 - R1999.99: R92.00
• R2000.00 - R5000.00: R115.00
The recipient is not charged when the sender uses the SA Post office to send money.
Before sending money to another country, the sender has to show an identity document or passport, as well as proof of residence.
