GQEBERHA – SAPS Algoa Park police are warning e-hailing drivers to use their discretion and to act with caution when responding to calls for pick-ups at Vista University in Missionvale.
This warning comes after two e-hailing drivers were allegedly hi-jacked outside the campus while waiting for their ‘clients.’ In the latest incident, at about 20:00 last night, 23 July 2022, the complainant received a request to pick up a person from the university who needed to be taken to Summerstrand. While he was engaging with the security at the gate, a male approached him from behind and opened his front door of his Ford Figo. The person produced a firearm and demanded the vehicle and his cellphone. A second suspect appeared and the complainant jumped out and the suspects drove off in his car towards Izinyoka.
Both vehicles were recovered in the Izinyoka area.
Police are advising e-hailers to use their discretion or to avoid any pick-ups outside the campus as it is a hotspot for vehicle hijackings.
