Stilfontein: The South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Operation Vala Umgodi task team in the North West province has reiterated its call for illegal miners in the Stilfontein area to return to the surface. In a bid to safeguard lives, the SAPS, in collaboration with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), has facilitated the delivery of water and food to those underground, encouraging them to resurface safely.

According to South African Government News Agency, the police and other safety officials will maintain their presence in the North West until all illegal miners have resurfaced and are apprehended. The SAPS issued a statement urging the illegal miners to come above ground to receive necessary aid, including medical attention if required.

The statement from SAPS also appealed to the local community to allow police to conduct their operations without interference, emphasizing that criminal activities will not be tolerated. “We appeal to the community in the area to allow the police space to d
o their job. The SAPS will not allow criminality to thrive,” the police asserted.

Efforts by the authorities have already led to more than 1000 individuals resurfacing from illegal mining operations. However, the task force continues its mission to ensure that all remaining individuals underground are brought to the surface. “Today, only three illegal miners have resurfaced. The SAPS will continue to stamp the authority of the state without fear or favour,” the police stated.

This week, the Cabinet acknowledged the efforts of the police in combating illegal mining activities in the North West, commending their work in addressing the ongoing situation.
