Police in Gqeberha confiscate a firearm and drugs in separate incidents

GQEBERHA – Efforts to eliminate the proliferation of illegal firearms and drugs continue to bear fruits as SAPS Bethelsdorp and the Anti-Gang Unit members clamp down on criminals and their activities.

It is alleged that at about 17:30 on Monday, 10 January 2022, SAPS Bethelsdorp Crime prevention members were patrolling in Bloemendal when they noticed a suspicious looking male walking in Aspelling Street. They followed the male into Astrie Street and stopped him. On searching him, a pistol, a magazine with 10 rounds of ammunition and a packet containing 7 x .22 rounds of ammunition were found in his possession.

The 22-year-old gang affiliate was arrested and detained on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

In another separate incident, at about 00:10 this morning, 11/01, Anti-Gang Unit members confiscated 1600 mandrax tablets at a house in Kamesh Drive in Rosedale. It is alleged that as members tactically approached the house, the suspect was seen hiding a shoe box under the bed. While locking the pitbull dog away, the suspect jumped over the wall and fled.

On inspecting the shoebox, a large amount of mandrax tablets was found inside. The total estimated value of the drugs is R100 000-00. An enquiry docket was opened for further investigation.
