Members of the Flying Squad were busy observing the movement of occupants in a VW Polo, involved in committing armed robberies in different parts of the metropole, when they spotted the vehicle near to Vangate Mall on Monday 13 September 2021.
As the patrol vehicle approached, the driver of the suspicious vehicle sped off, which resulted in a high speed chase. The vehicle was brought to a halt near to the corners of Duinefontein and Ascension Roads in Heideveld. A 9mm Norinco pistol with ammunition and presumed stolen property were confiscated. Three males aged 21, 29 and 32 were arrested and detained.
Once charged the suspects are expected to make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistrate court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of presumed stolen property and a stolen motor vehicle.
