Members of Mangaung Metro DOCC Crime Combating Unit arrested five suspects in possession of cables suspected to be stolen during the early hours of today (12 October). According to the report, members were patrolling the R702 when they spotted a white NP 200 Nissan bakkie heavily loaded with people sitting at the back on top of a cargo headed towards Bloemfontein.
The police turned around and followed the suspicious vehicle and stopped it near Mangaung Maximum Prison entrance. They immediately noticed that the vehicle belonged to Mangaung Metro Municipality when they approached it. Members introduced themselves to the driver and sought permission to check what the heavy cargo.
A stack of rolled uncut cable with other small pieces was discovered at the back of the bakkie. The driver identified himself as an employee of Mangaung Metro Municipality. The police arrested him and four other suspects for possession of presumably stolen cables.
The cable was later identified as a telecommunications company property valued at approximately R7 000.00. The five suspects will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 14 October 2021.
