Police Arrest 11 Suspects on Charges of Extortion at Limpopo Mine.

LIMPOPO: Limpopo police have arrested 11 suspects on charges of extortion reported at one of the mines in the Tubatse policing area in the Sekhukhune district. Members of the Provincial Organised Crime Unit were notified of an incident where the local business forum handed a memorandum of complaints to the mine during October 2024.

According to South African Government News Agency, following other engagements between the mine and the forum, there was disagreement on some of the terms, including the forum’s demand to be given mine tenders. The forum allegedly threatened to close and disrupt mining activities on Friday if the mine did not meet its demands.

On Friday, at around 12:30 pm, the 11 members attached to the business forum gathered at the mine gate, where they were immediately arrested. Police investigations are ongoing.
