The City of Cape Town is embarking on the second phase of the upgrading of Kruskal Avenue in Bellville. Kruskal Avenue is a major pedestrian route from the Bellville Station into Bellville CBD and beyond. The City therefore invites all interested and affected residents to attend an open day on Wednesday, 6 April 2022 outside the Middestad Mall entrance where they will be able to view the design proposals and obtain information directly from the City’s Urban Planning specialists.

This project will include the upgrading of Kruskal Avenue, and Lower Blanckenberg Street. The second phase of this upgrade will extend from Cross Street, situated south of Voortrekker Road, to Bellville Station.

‘The upgrading of the hard and soft landscaping of Kruskal Avenue will act as a catalyst in the regeneration of the surrounding area. I urge residents to attend the open day and to provide input on the design proposals for the area. Our main aim here is to improve the pedestrian environment in the area and to create investor confidence in the Bellville CBD. We believe this upgrade project could change the public’s perceptions of the Bellville CBD by strategically upgrading the one gateway into the Bellville CBD along Voortrekker Road Corridor,’ said the Deputy Mayor and the Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

The details of the open day are as follows:

Date: Wednesday, 6 April 2022

Time: 12:00 to 18:00

Venue: Outside Middestad Mall Entrance, Kruskal Avenue

The detailed design, which is in currently in process, includes plans for the installation of new lighting; benches, paving, irrigation and public art. New trading bay locations and parking types have also been included.

After the detailed design has been finalised, the procurement process for the project will commence later this year. Construction is planned to commence mid-2023 if all goes according to plan.

The City completed the first phase of the Kruskal Avenue upgrade in the Bellville central business district in October 2020. The first phase included sections of Teddington Road, Voortrekker Road and Kruskal Avenue in the Bellville central business district.
