Industry players in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector have committed more than N.dollars 500,000 in cash and in-kind contributions for the upcoming seventh ICT summit scheduled from 09 to 11 October 2023.
Launching the summit here on Wednesday, under the theme 'Rethinking Cybersecurity Investment to Safeguard the Digital Economy and its Opportunities,' Minister of Information and Communication Technology (MICT), Peya Mushelenga, stated that the summit's objective is to provide a platform for discussing global and national industry trends and challenges.
Mushelenga stressed that the digital economy offers substantial potential for economic growth, innovation and social development, but it also comes with new risks and vulnerabilities, that require effective management.
'Cyber-threats are evolving at an alarming rate, with cybercrimes continuing to target individuals, property and government. Fraudulent activities are conducted online, and illegal software and malware find their way into the devices of unsuspecting users,' he pointed out.
He emphasised the need for the country to invest in cutting-edge technologies, nurture a skilled workforce and promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness. The summit's goal is to convene industry leaders, policymakers, experts and innovators to address cybersecurity challenges and opportunities, guiding the path towards a secure and prosperous digital future for Namibia.
'I urge all stakeholders to actively engage in the summit. Let us use this opportunity to establish new partnerships, strengthen existing collaborations and collectively shape the future of the ICT sector in Namibia,' he urged.
A total of 20 prominent industry players have pledged sponsorship for the event, with more than 400 participants and over 30 exhibitors expected to take part.
