Oshikoto teen girl arrested for alleged concealment of birth

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Oshikoto region have arrested a 17-year-old Namibian girl for alleged concealment of birth at Onamavo village in the Omuntele constituency. According to NamPol's Oshikoto Regional Crime Investigation Coordinator Deputy Commissioner Titus Ekandjo on Tuesday, the incident happened on Thursday around 05h00. 'It is alleged that the suspect gave birth and concealed the baby, resulting in the suspect experiencing heavy bleeding which forced her to inform the grandmother that she was not feeling well,' reported Ekandjo. Unknowingly of the concealment, the grandmother advised the suspect to visit the Omuntele Clinic for treatment from where she was referred to the Omuthiya State Hospital. 'At Omuthiya State Hospital, the suspect was diagnosed that she recently gave birth and confirmed that she allegedly buried the baby in their yard,' reported Ekandjo. She is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard. In a separate incident, a 56-year-old Namibian man all egedly committed suicide in his room at Ontunda village in Oshikoto's Onyaanya constituency, on Monday. Ekandjo said the incident happened around 11h00 when the deceased reportedly hanged himself with a rope on the roof of his sleeping room. 'The deceased was discovered by his niece upon realizing that he had not left his room as usual in the morning,' he said. No suicide note was left and the body was transported to Omuthiya Police Mortuary for autopsy. Police investigations in both matters continue. Source: The Namibia Press Agency
