Operation Vala Umgodi team in Free State turned focus “to intensifying efforts to remove illegal firearms and improved gun control.” Gathered intelligence led the task team to two farms in Winburg and Boshof. Uncontrolled firearms are targeted by criminal elements during farm attacks and end up in commission of other unwanted crimes.
On Tuesday 1 October 2024 the operators confiscated 2 Long rifles; 332 different types of ammunition rounds, 201 spent cartridges and 5 magazines at a farm in Winburg. An enquiry was opened at Winburg Police Station. Further investigation was conducted and another revolver, gas gun, propelant gun powder tins and 1133 various calibre rounds of ammunition were seized. The team then apprehended the 47-year-old male for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
On Wednesday 2 October 2024 the team proceeded to a farm in the Boshof area. A search was conducted and four (4) hunting rifles, 70 different types of ammunition rounds, 41 spent cartridges and 251 projectiles were
confiscated. An Enquiry docket for further investigation was opened at Boshof Police Station with an arrest expected soon. Operation Vala Umgodi team will continue to execute different operational concepts to eradicate crime at all identified hotspot areas in Free State Province.
