Waterval Boven: An intelligence-driven operation conducted by members from Operation Vala Umgodi has led to the arrest of 16 foreign nationals for contravention of the Immigration Act of South Africa. The joint operation was conducted by multidisciplinary teams from Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande, and Nkangala District, in conjunction with members from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) at a farm in Waterval Boven.
According to South African Police Service, amongst the arrested suspects, aged between 18 and 40, seven are females, and the rest are males. These individuals were also charged with possession of gold-bearing materials. Further charges could be added against the suspects in relation to the ongoing investigation by the police, as it is suspected they were involved in illegal mining activities.
Law enforcement officials confiscated items such as generators, Phendukas, and other equipment during the operation. The suspects are expected to appear at the Belfast Magistrate’s Court to face the charges.
Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has applauded law enforcement agencies for their efforts. The General indicated that efforts will continue to be intensified throughout the province to combat illegal mining activities.
