Pretoria: The South African Police Service (SAPS) has successfully arrested 16,684 suspects for various offences through the nationwide Operation Shanela, an initiative aimed at combating and preventing crime across the country.
According to South African Government News Agency, the operation, which took place between 20 and 26 July 2026, led to the arrest of 1,869 undocumented immigrants. Additionally, detectives apprehended 2,547 wanted individuals linked to violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, carjacking, illegal possession of firearms, and house and business robberies. Among those arrested was a prominent traditional healer from KwaMashu, implicated in orchestrating the murders of African National Congress Youth League member Thamsanqa Kingdom Gcabashe and eThekwini Metro Police officials Lindokuhle Madonsela and Ndumiso Thusi.
In a notable development, SAPS, on 25 July 2026, arrested the alleged mastermind behind the murder of DA candidate councillor Sinovuyo Dyokwe. This arrest was the result of a joint, intelligence-driven operation involving Western Cape Serious Violent Crime Investigation detectives and the Special Task Force in Parklands. The police emphasized that Operation Shanela continues to send a message that crime and lawlessness, whether perpetrated by locals or foreign nationals, will not be tolerated in South Africa.
The operation saw significant arrests across several crime categories. Among them, 114 suspects were apprehended for attempted murder, with Gauteng recording the highest number at 26, followed by the Eastern Cape with 24. In addition, 152 suspects were arrested for rape, and 101 were arrested for illegal possession of firearms, with the Western Cape leading in this category. Other notable figures include 660 arrests for illegal dealing in liquor, 230 for dealing in drugs, and 2,530 for possession of drugs.
The operations also resulted in notable confiscations and recoveries, including 128 unlicensed firearms, 2,296 rounds of ammunition, contraband goods worth more than R46 million, various types of drugs, and 55 hijacked and stolen vehicles.
Provincial takedowns highlighted the successful interventions across different regions. In the Free State, law enforcement intercepted a truck suspected of transporting stolen copper cable, resulting in the arrest of a 43-year-old driver. In the Western Cape, Crime Intelligence members dismantled an alleged gang storage facility, seizing firearms and drugs valued at R10 million. Gauteng saw significant recoveries of firearms and vehicles, alongside the seizure of counterfeit items worth over R27.5 million.
In Mpumalanga, the Ermelo K9 Unit arrested suspects for possessing 204 kg of dagga, while in North West, police apprehended a suspect after a shootout involving a stolen firearm. Limpopo saw the arrest of a cashier involved in alleged fraud, and in the Northern Cape, a large quantity of dagga was seized. In KwaZulu-Natal, a suspect was arrested for modifying firearms, and in the Eastern Cape, stolen Transnet infrastructure was recovered.
Operation Shanela's extensive reach and successful outcomes reflect the ongoing commitment of SAPS to maintain law and order across South Africa.
