Operation Shanela nabs over 500 for various offences, 38 for possession of dangerous weapons amongst others

The Provincial high-density Operation Shanela that commenced on Monday 02 September until Sunday 08 September 2024 nabbed 38 suspects for possession of dangerous weapons amongst the 594 suspects arrested across the five Districts in Limpopo province.

The operations focused on tracing of wanted suspects, roadblocks at identified hotspots areas, vehicle checkpoints at identified hotspots areas, compliance at licensed liquor outlets, second-hand goods dealers, informal business inspections at spaza shops and mines for safety regulations.

The operations were jointly effected in collaboration with other stakeholders that comprised the members of the South African National Defense Force, Traffic Police, Community Policing Forum (CPF), Youth Desk, Department of Correctional Service and Home Affairs as well as private security.

Furthermore, significant arrests were effected consisting of 10 for business robbery, 46 for assault GBH, 14 for murder, seven for dealing in drugs, 35 for illegal dealing in liquor, six f
or possession of firearms, 42 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 157 illegal immigrants.

Police managed to confiscate 455 litres of alcoholic beverages, 126 various assorted rounds of ammunition, one cellphone, 10826 counterfeit goods, 39 dangerous weapons, 0,205 KG of dagga, 80 grams of cocaine drugs, five grams of heroin, 0,15 grams of nyaope drugs and one firearm.

Some of the suspects have already started to appear before their various Magistrate’s Courts.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe applauded the teams for the arrests that are continuously being executed across the province to reduce the criminal activities and elements during these time of the year when we are heading towards the festive season celebrations.

Police investigations are continuing.
