Open invitation to stakeholder workshop about draft Baboon Strategic Management Plan

The Cape Peninsula Baboon Management Joint Task Team (JTT) is hosting a stakeholder engagement workshop on Friday, 3 March 2023. Residents, stakeholders, and interested and affected parties are invited to attend and contribute in refining the draft Baboon Strategic Management Plan for the sustainable management of the Chacma Baboon population in the Cape Peninsula. Comments on the draft plan will be accepted until 31 March 2023.

The draft plan proposes a new sustainable approach with the three authorities – South African National Parks (SANParks), CapeNature and the City of Cape Town – leading and supporting the implementation of the plan. It also proposes the involvement of other stakeholders and role players, key among which are residents living in areas adjacent to baboons' natural habitat.

The stakeholder workshop will take place as follows:

Date: Friday, 3 March 2023

Time: 09:00 to 13:00, attendees are encouraged to arrive earlier so that proceedings can start on time

Venue: The Range Function and Conference Centre, Orpen Road, Tokai/Bergvliet

The draft plan is the result of the collective effort of the Joint Task Team, comprising representatives of SANParks, CapeNature and the City of Cape Town.

It is informed, among others, by research, international best practice and operational experience, as well as the input from stakeholders at Minister Barbara Creecy's roundtable event at Kirstenbosch on 7 June 2022, and the community engagements undertaken by the City of Cape Town in August and September last year.

The JTT encourages residents, interested and affected parties, and stakeholders to download the plan, and submit their proposals.
