OSHIFUKWA: In an appeal for community involvement, the Ondonga Traditional Authority (OTA) has asked the public to provide support to individuals with disabilities to foster their self-reliance. Senior councillor Lukas Shawana, who oversees disability affairs within the OTA, championed this cause at a recent Christmas event.
According to NAMPA, who spoke at a festive gathering at the Kufamosha Information Disability Centre (KIDC) in Oshifukwa, Oshikoto Region, assistance to people with disabilities should be rendered to affirm their rights and encourage self-help. He called on the community to contribute whatever they could and implored people with disabilities to adopt a positive, proactive approach to life.
Shawana further appealed to guardians and parents to educate those in their care on how to utilize their abilities, emphasizing the importance of working with one’s hands or limbs.
The KIDC, established by Petrus Tiofelus in 2020, stands as a beacon for disability rights and integration within the community. Tiofelus outlined the center’s role since its inception, noting its commitment to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities by informing them of their rights and involving them in community life.
Despite its modest beginning under a tree, the center has registered and supported 600 people with disabilities from all 14 regions of the country. The KIDC continues its outreach, seeking out individuals in need in various villages.
Tiofelus detailed the center’s services, which include coordination with social workers to facilitate social grants and enrollment in higher education institutions. Additionally, the KIDC aims to educate people with disabilities about their rights and has integrated traditional games such as Owela into its activities to promote cultural participation.
