Nearly 130 students graduated during the fifth National Youth Service (NYS) Technical Vocational Education and Training graduation ceremony at the Rietfontein Training Centre over the weekend.
In a statement issued on Monday, NYS said around 200 people attended the event in person, while over 1 000 others joined virtually on the special occasion.
“The 127 graduates completed their exit levels in 2021/2022 and received certificates in a variety of TVET trades including crop production, livestock production, farm management, bricklaying and plastering, clothing production, hospitality and tourism, joinery and cabinet making, metal fabrication, office administration, plumbing and pipe fitting and cosmetology and hairdressing,” the statement said.
NYS Board Chairperson Emmerentia Leonard during the event said the NYS recently developed a new Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP) for the period 2023-2028. This plan aligns with the National Development Plan (NDP5) as well as the strategic objectives of the line ministry.
“The ISBP also highlights areas where the service will focus on over the next five years. The strategic plan aims to enhance the performance, ensure sustainability of its programmes, meet shareholder expectations, and deliver high-quality services to young people,” the chairperson said.
Leonard stated that the strategic themes will include financial sustainability, which will focus on increasing revenue generation, and maximising asset utilisation and production; youth development and empowerment to enhance the quality NYS programmes and thereby produce employable and entrepreneurial youth. This will be bolstered by the service's existing and functional employee performance management system.
