During a first of its kind ceremony, dubbed Funda Phoyisa meaning “Police members study”, SAPS graduates in the greater Kimberley convened and were afforded the opportunity to showcase their graduation caps and gowns symbolising their individual academic achievements.

The event was hosted at the Kimberley CRC Church on Tuesday, 22 October 2024 and was attended by the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Corporate Services, Major General Thabo Mphuthi, the Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari, Provincial Heads, Station Commanders, senior officers and members.

In her welcoming address, the Provincial Head for Corporate Communication, Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien, indicated that the ceremony was a testament to the contributions made by the members by empowering themselves and investing in the organisation.

The purpose of the day was led by Brigadier Irene Kopeledi, the Provincial Head of Pro-Active Policing. She stated that the event was a clear indication of the academic qualifi
cations achieved by the officers and members. Graduates were encouraged to motivate their peers and to empower and develop themselves through continuous study.

Brigadier Kopeledi signified that being a police official is a calling and the graduates in attendance was a clear indication of the strides made to hone their knowledge and skills in order to deliver an effective service to the community.

Several speakers offered information regarding their respective environments, namely Mr Motsumi from the Sol Plaatje University, Mr Lecholo, the Moremolgolo Campus Manager, Captain Strauss from the SAPS Career Centre and Lt Colonel Oliphant from Human Resource Development.

The keynote address was delivered by Major General Mphuthi, who acknowledged the sacrifices made in order to empower oneself. She extended a heartfelt message to the families of the graduates who supported them during the process of achieving their respective qualifications. She reiterated that studying, especially continuous studying, is a life
time investment.

She encouraged the men and women in blue to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks.

In conclusion, she advocated the importance of seizing opportunities and inspiring change.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Colonel Qunta from Pro-Active Policing who acknowledged the graduates and their inspiration. She affirmed that the auspicious event will grow from strength to strength.
