North West Legislature Health Committee mourns deaths of 5 learns at Vyfhoef School in Potchefstroom
The North west Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Health and Social Development extends its heartfelt condolences to the Families, friends, learners and teacher at the Vyfhoek school in Potchefstroom on the tragic death of 5 Learners this afternoon.
This afternoon a heavy motor vehicle ploughed through the school fence located about 8km from Potchefstroom on the N12. Sadly 5 learners were killed in the accident and at least 5 other children sustained injuries in the accident.
The incident occurred while the department of health was unveiling new ambulances allocated in the province. Due to the number of patients involved, The MEC for Health in the province immediately, MEC Sambatha, released the new ambulances to attend to the multi casualty incident together with local emergency services.
Committee Chairperson, Hon. Gavin Edwards said the Committee extends its gratitude to all the private emergency medical and rescue services who together with the Provincial EMRS responded to the multi casualty incident. “All services worked tirelessly to stabilise the injured learners who were transported to the Potchefstroom hospital.
“The Portfolio Committee will request a report on the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, once the authorities have concluded their investigation,” said Hon. Edwards.
He said the Committee joins the families in mourning the loss of young lives in the province, while wishing the injured learners a speedy recovery.
