North West Legislature hosts Taking Legislature to the People Programme, 14 to 17 Mar

North West Legislature to host Taking Legislature to the People Programme in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District

On the 14-17 March, the North West Provincial Legislature will be hosting Taking the Legislature to the People programme in the Legislature Chamber in Mahikeng at 08h00. The event themed: “Facilitating Service Delivery and Accountability through effective citizenry participation,” is aimed at creating a platform where Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) will engage with community members to hear their concerns on various service delivery issues and discuss possible solutions as well as allow Members of the Executive Council (MECs) from various provincial departments to respond to such issues.

In terms of Section 118 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, provincial legislatures are mandated to facilitate public involvement on an open manner and holding its sittings and committees in public. Therefore, the purpose of the programme is to educate the public about how to participate in the programs that affect their lives; provide an opportunity to MECs to account to the people on the programs that they are leading and to ensure effective and efficient flow of information to empower communities to make informed decisions regarding service delivery related matters. The programme is further aimed at increasing awareness about legislative processes and profile the role of the Legislature as the people’s assembly promoting good governance and accountability.
