The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Health and Social Development chaired by Hon. Gavin Edwards has applauded the Department of Health, Lekwa-Temmane Local Municipality’s Fire Department together with members of the community for speedy response to the fire that broke out at Christiana Hospital. A total of 18 patients were safely evacuated to neighbouring hospitals but unfortunately the operational areas of the hospital which include the wards, patient records and theatre were destroyed in the fire.
Hon. Edwards said the Committee is saddened by the devastating fire at the hospital but appreciates the quick response of different stakeholders. “The extent of the destruction will have a dire impact on the delivery from health services to the community, and as a Committee, we implore the Department of Health to urgently explore alternative options for the continuation of the provision of health care services to the community. An urgent plan must be implemented to ensure that residents in the area are able to receive their Covid19 vaccinations,” said Hon. Edwards.
He said the Committee will request a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the fire, and the department must ensure that all health care facilities are compliant with the Fire Prevention act.
