Nan: The Pollution Control Department (PCD) has reported positive water quality levels in the Nan River, following recent inspections at four locations in the Mueang Nan District of Nan Province. The department advises residents to boil village tap water before using it for consumption.
According to Thai News Agency, the PCD carried out preliminary water quality assessments as part of the recovery efforts after the flooding in the region. While the water quality was generally good, purification processes are recommended before consumption. Notably, no free chlorine was detected in village tap water in two locations within Phu Piang District, prompting a public advisory to boil water for safety.
Mr. Suchart Chomklin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, emphasized the importance of environmental monitoring in the aftermath of the floods. He directed the PCD and related agencies to focus on water quality, wastewater treatment systems, and waste management to prevent contamination and reduce public impact.
Mr. Surin Worakitthamrong, Director-General of the Pollution Control Department, detailed the water quality measurements at key locations along the Nan River, including Nakhon Nan Phatthana Bridge, Phatthana Phuea Phak Bridge, Sri Bun Rueang Bridge, and Du Tai Phatthana Bridge. Tests showed a good average pH level of 8.15, dissolved oxygen at 7 mg/L, total dissolved solids at 147.5 mg/L, and electrical conductivity of 149.5 microsiemens/cm, indicating overall good water quality that nonetheless requires further treatment for safe consumption.
In Phu Piang District's Thung Naow Subdistrict Administrative Organization area and Thanang Village, water supply tests showed a pH level of 8.1 but a lack of free chlorine, raising the risk of bacterial contamination. Therefore, the PCD urges residents to boil tap water before consumption to ensure safety.
Additionally, the PCD has assessed wastewater treatment systems and waste disposal sites in Mueang Nan District, finding them within normal operational limits. The department is coordinating with relevant agencies to enhance waste management in Pua District, while closely monitoring environmental conditions to mitigate contamination risks during the recovery phase.
