Bonginkosi Sihle Delabantu (29) has yesterday appeared before the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder. The accused was remanded in custody until his next court appearance at Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 13 October 2021 for formal bail application.
Delabantu’s court appearance emanates from his arrest in the early hours of Monday morning, 4 October 2021. It is alleged that the lifeless body of Binni Magdeline Mogaki (67) was found at her house in Ikageng near Potchefstroom on Saturday, 17 July 2021. Moreover, the police noticed that the deceased was strangled to death with a piece of a string that was found around her neck. It was established during the initial investigation process that the deceased was staying alone and that only her cellphone and house keys were missing.
A team of investigators comprising of Organised Crime and Ikageng Detectives was formed to trace the suspect/s. Since the case was reported, a lot of analysis was conducted to isolate a possible suspect. The members had to do physical surveillance and in the process also befriended the suspect’s friends and eventually managed to identify the possible suspect’s house. Consequently, the suspect’s house was raided, but he was not found. The search was conducted at several places and the suspect was eventually spotted walking towards Ikageng Detectives’ offices wherein the team confronted him. After a short interrogation, the suspect conceded to be involved in the murder incident. The deceased’s cellphone and house keys which he allegedly took after the commission of crime, were also recovered.
Investigation into the matter continues.
Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended the team for apprehending the accused and reiterated that the police will leave no stone unturned in pursuing perpetrators of heinous crimes.
